CHILD ABUSE AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM
Course Description:
This course will address the function of the legal system in
responding to child maltreatment. Areas to be covered include: the nature
and scope of child abuse in the United States; the interaction of
multiple public and private agencies within the child protection system;
evidentiary issues arising in cases of child maltreatment; the role of
expert testimony in civil and criminal litigation; the scope of state
intervention in cases of child maltreatment; the role of family court
intervention; criminal prosecution of child abuse; the impact of social
science research on the law; the role of medical professionals in
responding to child abuse; and proposals for reforming the child
protection system. The course will be open to graduate students from
other colleges within the university in addition to law students.
Methodology:
All students will be assigned readings. Classroom instruction will
include lecture and discussion. Guest lecturers will provide instruction
in specialized areas.
Basis of Grade:
Participation in class discussion, paper, and examination.
Form of Grade:
Letter grade.

OPPORTUNITIES
The Children's Law Center hires second and third year law students to
work as research assistants on a part-time basis. Research assistants
perform a variety of tasks, including legal and non-legal research
related to child maltreatment and juvenile justice. Experience in
children's issues and course work in social sciences is preferred.

RESOURCE MATERIALS
USC Students conducting research may use the Children's Law Center
library. Extensive materials are available on legal issues related to
child maltreatment and juvenile justice. These materials
cannot be checked out, but can be used in the office. An automated
catalog allows search by title, author, or subject. Staff is available to provide
consultation on a selection of topics and current issues.
